Angela Evelyn Bassett is an American actress. Her work has been recognized for television and in film in the 1980s, she's won numerous awards such as two Golden Globe Awards and sixteen NAACP Image Awards in addition to nominations for two Academy Awards and seven Primetime Emmy Awards. Bassett grew up in Winston-Salem North Carolina, raised by an aunt and Uncle in New York New York. Bassett as well as her sister, and their mother were moved from the city of Winston-Salem to St. Petersburg Florida when Bassett was just five. Their father had divorced their mother. Bassett chose to become an actress after she saw the play Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, starring James Earl Jones. Yale University New Haven Connecticut awarded her a bachelor's degree (1980), in African American study, and a graduate degree (1983) at the Yale School of Drama. She was married in 1997. was married Courtney B. Vance who was a fellow actor.
